“A kind of Fasting God desires”

Fr. Takabatake Masayuki Sakai Bloc Team
Recently, we have just celebrated the nativity of the Lord, and yet, it’s so fast that after two months we will be entering into the Lenten season. This year’s 「Ash Wednesday」,which is also known as “the gate of the Lenten season”, falls on February 14. Every year during the time of Lent, we observe the days of “fasting” which is categorized into “大斎taisai” – eating one full meal a day, and “小斎shosai” – abstaining from eating meat.
YOU, maybe, plan to go on a diet now, for you had eaten too much during New Year. That’s the reason why there is「Fasting and Abstinence」. Jesus says, 「Prayer, Almsgiving, Fasting」are not superficial acts for self-satisfaction, but rather it is for a true conversion (change of heart) towards God and to one’s neighbor. To think the meaning of this conversion, let us see and reflect the words of Prophet Isaiah:

“Is this not the sort of fast that pleases me: to break unjust fetters, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free,
and to break all yokes?
Is it not sharing your food with the hungry, and sheltering the homeless poor; if you see someone lacking clothes, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own kin?
Then your light will blaze out like the dawn and your wound be quickly healed over.
Saving justice will go ahead of you and Yahweh’s glory come behind you.
Then you will cry for help and Yahweh will answer;
you will call and he will say, ‘I am here’.
If you do away with the yoke, the clenched fist and malicious words,
if you deprive yourself for the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, your light will rise in the darkness,
and your darkest hour will be like noon.” (Isaiah 58. 6 -10)

I hope that our community would be able to feel the real “Resurrection of the Lord”.
