『希望の巡礼者』

2025年が始まると同時に、聖年(Jubilee year)を私たちは歩みはじめました。今年の聖年のテーマは『希望の巡礼者』です。それは私たちのこの世界に希望が満ち溢れているからではなく、希望をなかなか見い出せないからこそ、キリスト者が希望の灯火(ともしび)を持って歩み出すことが求められているのです。
いま私たちの世界ではウクライナとパレスチナにおいての戦争が現実に続いています。いまだ停戦や和平の道筋を見い出すことができない状況にあり、世界中に無力感が拡がっています。また、大国をはじめとして多くの国々が軍事力強化を図り、自国ファーストを叫ぶ為政者たちによって国家間の緊張が高まっています。政治状況も混迷を深め、人と人にもイデオロギーによる分断が深まりつつあります。環境破壊による温暖化、いままでの常識を遥かに超える自然災害など、一国だけでなく地球全体が協力して対処して行かなければならない多くの問題が蓄積しています。だからこそ教皇は「希望を掲げて歩もう」と呼びかけておられるのです。
私が最近好んで見るNHKの番組に、『映像の世紀バタフライエフェクト』という番組があります。世界中に保存されていた映像記録を発掘し、再構成することによってテーマごとに歴史を追体験するドキュメンタリー番組です。私たちの世界は全て繋がっており、私たちの知り得る歴史の大きな出来事の背景には些細なきっかけが存在するのです。
バタフライエフェクトとは、気象学者のエドワード・ローレンツが提唱したカオス理論を語源としていますが、小さな変化が時間の経過と共に大きな変化をもたらすことを意味しています。バタフライには「蝶の羽ばたきが地球の裏側で竜巻を引き起こす」という比喩的なイメージが込められています。この理論を主体的に解釈すれば、一人ひとりが現実世界を好転させる可能性を持っているのです。
ユダヤ教徒で宗教哲学者であったマルチン･ブーバーは、「神は私たちの世界と離れた所に存在するのではなく、この世界は神の包容の中にある」と教え、そしてまた、「歴史は何らかの計画によって進行しているのではなく、神と人との対話のうちに生成していく」と述べています。
聖年の文章でフランシスコ教皇は「希望は錨(いかり)」であると言っています。私たちは船であり、神は揺るぎない大地であり、その大地に希望である錨(いかり)を降ろすことによって神と繋がり希望の未来を創造して行くことができるのです。
“Pilgrims of Hope”
We have started the journey of the Jubilee Year 2025. The Holy Year is centered on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope”. It is not because the world is full of hope, but because it is so hard to find it. Therefore, Christians are called to rekindle the flame of hope and continue the journey.
The world is facing many war situations, especially the war between Ukraine
and Russia. It seems to be difficult to find a path to a ceasefire or a
peace agreement, so a feeling of helplessness is spreading throughout the
world. Besides, many countries are strengthening their military power.
Tensions among nations are rising since Leaders are primarily concerned
about the security of their own countries. The political situation is becoming
more and more chaotic and ideological divisions among people are growing.
Aside from that, we face many other challenges such as global warming and
natural disasters caused by environmental destruction. Indeed, this requires
a cooperation not only among some few countries but the entire planet.
That is why the Pope is inviting us to a “journey of hope”.
One of the NHK programs that I recently like to watch is “The Century of Butterfly Effect”. In fact, it is a documentary that relives History by releasing and reconstructing video footages stored around the world. This shows how things are interconnected and how small triggers are behind the major events in History. The Butterfly effect is derived from the theory proposed by the meteorologist Edward Lorenz. He stressed that small changes could lead to a big one. The mentioned theory has a metaphorical image of a butterfly flapping wings causing a downpour on the other side of the earth. By interpreting this theory, we could say that each one of us can change this world into a better place by our actions even though they might appear simple and small.
The Jewish philosopher Martin Buber said that “God does not exist outside the world, but rather this world is contained in God”. He also stated that “History does not proceed according to our particular plan but rather arises through a dialogue between God and mankind”.
In his message of the Jubilee 2025, pope Francis says, “Hope is an anchor”.
We are in a ship and God is the unshakable ground. By lowering the anchor
of hope on the shore, we can connect ourselves with God and create a future
full of hope.
